Mikey Pauker Reaches New Musical Heights on Latest Album

Posted by: on Jan 24, 2018 | Comments (0)

Berkeley folk and world music artist Mikey Pauker is already known in the Bay Area for his open-hearted melodies and catchy reggae beats, though fans are in for a different musical dimension when Pauker unveils his new album, ASCENSION, with an album-release concert on Jan 25 at Key Tea in San Rafael.

Drawing on influences that range from Bob Marley to The Police, Pauker’s output up to this year have heavily relied on electronic flourishes, yet ASCENSION departs from that aesthetic with a raw instrumental sound captured in live recording sessions under Grammy-nominated producer Warren Huart.

Thematically, ASCENSION takes inspiration for the outpouring of communal strength and resolve that manifested after the North Bay wildfires as well as the hurricanes that impacted Texas and Florida earlier in 2017. With a background in Yoga and mystical practices, Pauker’s sound aims to elevate the listener’s spirit with devotional songwriting.

Be the first to hear ASCENSION’s uplifting music when Pauker plays a full band set tomorrow, Jan 25, featuring opening act Annie Anton and a post-set DJ party at Key Tea, 921 C St, San Rafael. 7:30pm. All Ages. $20 at the door. For details and tickets, click here.

Bill Callahan Coming to Gun Bun in Sonoma

Posted by: on Jan 6, 2016 | Comments (0)

Subtle lo-fi songwriter Bill Callahan, who spent 15 years making music under the name Smog before venturing out under his birth name, opens the 2016 concert season at Sonoma’s hippest winery venue, Gundlach Bundschu, next month on Feb 24.

Fans of Smog and Callahan (who I count myself among) have long been obsessed with his sonorous baritone vocals delivered over sometimes dreary, sometimes groovy and often minimalistic instrumentation. Since the late ’80s, Callahan has operated with a singularly artistic vision, infusing his poetic songs with heartbreaking and revealing storytelling lyricism.

For the upcoming February concert, co-presented by (((folkYEAH!))), the songwriter is slated to appear in Gun Bun’s historic century-old Redwood Barn, recently restored to its former glory. Carpooling is encouraged, and dressing in warm layers is a must! Tickets to this intimate, one of a kind concert are available here.

Below is a video of one of my favorite Smog tracks, “Hit the Ground Running.”

Matt Bauer Sings in Sonoma

New York City songwriter Matt Bauer just released his latest, Dream’s End, an enchanting album of orchestral folk and acoustic rock. And he’s celebrating with a west coast tour that wraps in Sonoma this weekend.

In the tradition of old-fashioned folk laments and murder ballads, Dream’s End is a head trip of lyrically fragile and musically melodic songs, like the lead single “I Am Trying to Disappear.” While Bauer assembles a more sonically diverse palette for this conceptual effort, it’s his emotional depth that again lays a strong foundation for his striking and often stark arrangements.

On Sunday, November 22, Matt Bauer will be in Sonoma, performing at a house show. Write [email protected] for details, and listen to “I Am Trying to Disappear” below.

KT Tunstall Brings Desert Rhythms to Napa

Scottish-born and London-based, KT Tunstall has achieved a swell of success across the pond with emotional folk rock songwriting and a strong, sonorous delivery that rocketed her to the top of the charts. While this may the point where a lesser talent hits cruise control, Tunstall two years ago did the opposite, putting her musical pedal to the metal and roaring headlong out of the dreary, cloudy skies of England straight for the hot, dry deserts of Arizona.

The result of her sojourn was the critically-lauded album Invisible Empire//Crescent Moon. Tunstall is a gem of a songwriter, lyrically raw while poetically sublime. Her deft guitar melodies and her ethereal voice, with just a slight Scottish brogue popping up every so often, is one of the sweetest in this or any hemisphere.

Tonight and tomorrow, Tuntall brings her globe-trotting style to Napa for two nights of dusty, shimmering indie folk rock before she joins pianist and bandleader Jools Holland back in the United Kingdom. Check out the music video for her single “Feel It All” below and pop on over to City Winery to catch Tunstall before she skips town.
