David Luning Gets Devilish with “In Hell I Am” Single

Posted by: on Jun 7, 2019 | Comments (0)

Sonoma County-grown singer-songwriter David Luning has his hands full this summer. In two weeks, he joins the legendary John Hiatt on tour for seven dates of solo acoustic performances, in which he’ll perform his new single “In Hell I Am,” which just received featured placement in the Netflix hit series, Lucifer.

Luning also produced an animated and inventively original Official Lyric Video for “In Hell I Am” as a way to introduce new viewers to the song. In a statement, Luning says, “Because I am insane, I spent over 80 feverish hours drawing and creating hundreds and hundreds of individual frames to make this animated lyric video. I have never done animation like this before, but I wanted to do something completely different for this video, and I’m pretty stoked on how it turned out.”

Before embarking on the tour with Hiatt, Luning and his full band headline a night of music with special guest Jade Jackson, herself a rising Americana star, on Friday, Jun 14, at Mystic Theatre, 23 Petaluma Blvd. N, Petaluma. 8:30pm. $18. 707.775.6048.

Bay Area alternative indie band Picture Atlantic possess a rapid fire rock and roll sound that harkens back to the festive pop of British Invasion bands while repping an authentic West Coast brashness.

Recently, the band released the quick, acerbic and memorable “Billy Banker,” the second official single off the upcoming full length album, Assouf, due out October 21.

Take two minutes out of your Friday to hear the high-energy single below, and head over to Silo’s in Napa tonight to see the band perform with Napa natives and fellow indie rockers Anadel. The first fifty in the door even get that sweet show poster to take home.

Listen to Sugar Candy Mountain’s “666”

Oakland indie-pop band Sugar Candy Mountain describe themselves as the Beach Boys on acid, and by the sound of their latest offering, that sums it up quite nicely.

The band’s sophomore album, 666, is due out in July. In advance of that beastly release, they’re letting us in on the record’s title track. It’s a head trip of sublimely drugged out and jangly laidback guitars and vocalist Ash Reiter – a Sebastopol native – singing an ode to Satanic summers in an ethereal tone.

Sugar Candy Mountain performs this Saturday, June 4, at HopMonk Tavern in Sebastopol with Salt Suns and Indianna Hale. Get details here, and click on the box below to listen to “666” now.

Listen to the Debut Single from Night Shade

Brand new North Bay electronic rock ensemble Night Shade made their offical aural debut this morning when they released their first-ever single, the haunting and hypnotic “Mother,” on their bandcamp page.

Made up of long time music makers Darwin Meiners, Emily Jane White and Derek Owen Doss, Night Shade’s dark, glassy synths and densely layered vocals here perfectly float over a swirling beat and single strained guitar chord.

Lyrically, “Mother” is longing and emotionally penetrating, as maternal figures are taken over by the mythos of patriarchy. Musically, the song builds in scope and urgency throughout with an ending that leaves you wanting more.

Hopefully, more is on the way soon from Night Shade. Stay tuned.

Earlier this year, I caught up with Steep Canyon Rangers banjo player Graham Sharp. You can read that interview here. And click below to hear “Radio.”

Steve Martin & Steep Canyon Rangers perform on Thursday, Aug 20, at the Green Music Center, 1801 East Cotati Ave, Rohnert Park. 866.955.6040.
