Petaluma folk-rock quartet Trebuchet are finally out of the studio and ready to start unveiling their new sophomore album, Volte-Face, due out early next year. First up, Trebuchet premieres the album’s lead single, “A Confession,” which finds vocalist and songwriter Eliott Whitehurst delving deep into family memories and bringing back with him a questioning spirit.
Bolstered by harmonies from drummer Paul Haile, keyboardist Lauren Haile and bassist Navid Manoochehri, Whitehurst’s newfound lyrical longing is brought to life with slow-building acoustics expanding into a mellifluous choir. If “A Confession” is any indicator, Volte-Face looks to be a mature and introspective reckoning of an album.

That show also features new Bay Area band Mare Island, featuring members of Loma Prieta and The New Trust, and all proceeds will go to a benefit fundraiser for the victims of the recent Oakland warehouse fire. Next week, on Dec 18, Trebuchet plays their annual “A Very Trebuchet Christmas” concert in Petaluma, featuring them and several other North Bay acts performing Christmas covers and more.
Sonoma County experimental band OVVN is an undeniable and unapologetic force of noise on their new LP, “I Love Myself And Want To Live,” out now on San Francisco-based label Don’t Look Down Records. The four-piece outfit, fronted by vocalist and songwriter Ethan Jayne, has been steadily gaining momentum with several self-released EPs over the last few years, and this debut full-length, full of droning metal riffs and feedback squals that travel unpredictable sonic paths, is an intense one-of-a-kind rock and roll experience.
Matching the aural edginess, this darkly-tinged music video for the album’s single, “Sores,” offers a gritty and mysterious vignette paired with ominous shots of the band playing live for an effect like that of an old Nirvana music video on quaaludes–in a good way.

Santa Rosa indie power trio The New Trust have been a staple of Sonoma County music going on 13 years now, formed by Velvet Teen bassist Josh Staples, guitarist Sara Sanger and drummer Julia Lancer. From their 2003 debut release, “We are fast-moving motherfuckers. We are women and men of action,” which saw the band as a four-piece outfit with guitarist Michael Richardson (Benton Falls); to their latest full-length, 2013’s “Keep Dreaming,” which found the band recording with studio legend Steve Albini, the New Trust has kept up a frenzied pace and sharp sound, the best of which is on display in their new cassette-only release, “These Motherfuckers: The Best of Decade One.”
Available now online and at the Last Record Store in Santa Rosa, the cassette boasts 27 tracks and over 80 minutes of music. Side A is composed of 15 of the band’s most beloved songs. Side B switches it up with rarities, B-sides, demos and live recordings to offer a fully rounded listening experience. There’s no downloading this album, so if you’re a die-hard New Trust fan, you’ll want to grab a copy of this cassette and dust off your walkman.

We’ve been a big fan of Sonoma County indie pop outfit Lungs and Limbs for the better part of a year, following the four-piece electronic wiz kids as they built their own studio, self-recorded their debut EP, Lifelike, and self-released it last November.
Now, the band is trying to take things to the next level and looking for allies to help them reach it. Lungs and Limbs plan to tour extensively in 2016, taking their hook-laden rock to new locales; and they’re also looking to record a new album by year’s end, but they need your donations to get the show on the road.

Brand new North Bay electronic rock ensemble Night Shade made their offical aural debut this morning when they released their first-ever single, the haunting and hypnotic “Mother,” on their bandcamp page.
Made up of long time music makers Darwin Meiners, Emily Jane White and Derek Owen Doss, Night Shade’s dark, glassy synths and densely layered vocals here perfectly float over a swirling beat and single strained guitar chord.
Lyrically, “Mother” is longing and emotionally penetrating, as maternal figures are taken over by the mythos of patriarchy. Musically, the song builds in scope and urgency throughout with an ending that leaves you wanting more.
Hopefully, more is on the way soon from Night Shade. Stay tuned.
Onstage with Jim and Tom has long been one of my favorite podcasts and video series, focusing on local music and the historic Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, run by hosts Tom Gaffey and Jim Agius. The series incorporates interviews with local bands and live concert films, and this week the project unveiled their most ambitious concert feature yet.
Last summer, recent Norbay Music Award-winners the Velvet Teen released their long-awaited and exceptional indie rock album, All is Illusory, and toured the US; capping the trek with a massive show at the Phoenix Theater on August 22. To top it off, the Onstage film crew was there to capture the whole darn thing.
Edited by Agius and mixed by Greenhouse Recording Studio co-owner and engineer Paul Haile, this is a clean, clear and professional production that goes beyond simple recording and stands as a full-on film. And the band has never sounded better, captured here in their element, playing for the hometown crowd.

Tennessee-born songwriter Clark “Big Kitty” Williams has cultivated a fringe following for his idiosyncratic folk and country ditties that are equally humorous and harmonious. Two months back, Williams trekked from the blue mountains of his longtime home of Chattanooga, TN to settle in the Gravenstein apple orchards of Sebastopol. And he’s brought his music with him.
Williams has already played a few gigs around town in the last month, and this week he’ll be at Jasper O’Farrells on Thursday, Dec 3, from 6pm to 9pm. If you’ve never heard Big Kitty’s music, click on the music video for his song “Little Man” below, and head over to the show tomorrow to welcome Williams to the North Bay.
Sonoma’s 1955 are a sauntering garage rock trio who excel at slick throwback riffs, addictive hooks and smart songwriting. Formed in 2012, the band is made up of Sasha Papadin (lead vocals, guitar), Kieran Maloney (drums) and Dane Gaffney (bass); and their musical output thus far has been defined by high energy and hot licks.
This week, 1955 unveiled a new music video for their hand-clapping, toe-tapping single, “Glory Days.” Set in the sweltering heat of Palm Springs and directed Papdin’s brother William, the video is inspired by the visual aesthetics of one of the band’s favorite movies, “Sexy Beast,” and shines with a sunny, ultra-cool vibe that matches the colorful tune perfectly.

It’s been years since we’ve heard from Charley Peach, the high energy and melodic rock band fronted by vocalist Kaylene Harry and guitarist Justyn Delbridge, and maybe the name doesn’t ring any bells for newcomers to the music scene. But, that’s all about to change.
From their Facebook page, the newly resurrected and reinvigorated Charley Peach last month announced a new show and new songs coming our way.
It’s been a looong time since you’ve heard anything Charley Peach related, but we’re back from the dead! We’re doing our first show in years and we would love to see you! Also, this is NOT a one off kind of thing. We’ve been jamming for the last few months, and already have a handful of new songs to add to the old ones.
Charley Peach make their return to the stage this Friday, Nov 6, at Whiskey Tip in Santa Rosa. They split a bill with Santa Rosa’s Become the Villain, a solo indie rock project from songwriter Neem Wood that’s recently seen new life as a full band. Santa Rosa alt-rockers the Tioxxaa open the show.

Back in July, I spoke with Santa Rosa indie folk rockers Rags about their DIY approach and upcoming debut album. That record, Grounding, finally has a release date of November 13, and today the band unveils “Piece Together,” their first music video off the album.
“Piece Together” is a beautifully melancholic acoustic dirge. Singer and songwriter Charlie Davenport’s rhythmic riffs are buoyed by the swelling cello of Jiordi Rosales, while the drums and bass of Zak Garn and Travis Hendrix fill out the spaces in between the group’s stirring vocal harmonies. Directed by Jim Shoop, the visuals here are hazy, hypnotic and intensely intimate.
